We have a boat… almost!
On a gloomy day in January, James, Chris and Andy travelled from Portsmouth to ocean rowing boat specialist Rannoch Adventure in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex.
Our game plan for the day was two fold… deliver our Rannoch Explorer for an upgrade and service. Following many trips out on the Solent to build up our hours in readiness for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, we all agreed on the addition of a rudder to help improve steering on the longer trips.
Our second reason for travelling to Rannoch, and the one we were most excited for, was to see, for the first time, our custom-built R45 Carbon Elite Ocean rowing boat.
Whilst only midway through the build, and in two halves – the hull and the deck, Rannoch Owner Charlie Pitcher, gave us the grand tour of our ocean rowing boat.
When completed she will be 25 foot in length, weighing in at 1.5 tonnes and capable of carrying 4 men and all their supplies/kit for a journey of 30 – 40 days. There are cabins at each end for storage and sleeping, a water maker which will enable us to produce 60 litres per day, solar panels to generate power, Lithium batteries and a full suite of Garmin and Raymarine navigation systems and autohelm, to name just a few of the features.
The next time we see her will be in March and is the day we take ownership of our ocean rowing boat. She will be fully equipped and ocean ready. That day really can’t come soon enough!
Seeing her laid up in the moulds in two halves was a really defining moment for the team and prompted a mix of emotions… sheer excitement that this small ocean rowing boat will take us across the Atlantic Ocean through to the realisation of the scale of the epic challenge we face physically, mentally and financially.
The corporate sponsorship drive in order to help fund this challenge is well underway. Whilst at times can be challenging, we are drawing on connections from all walks of our lives!
